The house from the garden
From the poolThe seventh house we built in Umalas, and the one where the owners asked for something darker. The bones are the same as the others on this lane: a white rendered two-storey house behind a wall, black steel-framed glazing, a pool along the front and a garden that closes in around it. Inside it turns: black stone basins, a black kitchen with dark marble, black woven pendants over an oak table.
The bathrooms are the thing people photograph. Round porthole windows cut through the render, one big and one small, so the freestanding bath sits in a circle of garden. The guest bathroom gets the same black basin under a backlit oval mirror. The outdoor shower is against a white wall with a palm growing through it.
Upstairs, the second bedroom has a balcony that hangs over the garden, and a terrace on the flat roof takes the evening. The ground-floor bedroom opens straight onto the pool through steel doors.
