Savannah hills dropping to a bay of islands at Labuan Bajo, Flores, at dawn

Labuan Bajo

Hills above a bay full of islands, and Komodo at the door.

The harbour town at the western tip of Flores, gateway to Komodo National Park and one of the five destinations Indonesia is building out as a priority. Dry hills drop to a bay of islands; the guest comes for the water and stays for a week.

Labuan Bajo is a different Indonesia from Bali: dry, dramatic, and half-empty. The town sits on a bay at the western tip of Flores, an hour's flight from Denpasar, with Komodo National Park and its islands laid out in front of it. Ten years ago it was a fishing harbour with a dive shop. Now it has an international airport, a marina, a Marriott Luxury Collection resort, and a government that has named it one of five priority destinations for the country.

The guest here is on a boat by day, on Padar and Pink Beach and with the dragons on Rinca, and wants a house on a hill to come back to at night. Our sites are on the ridges north of the town, looking west over the bay and the islands to the sunset, which is the thing everyone in Labuan Bajo stops for. The land is still priced for a place most people have not heard of.
